I’ve written in a previous post about my own oven troubles and now I’ve just read on Kerryn’s blog that she’s suffering a similiar fate. If only we had access to a community wood-fired oven like the one they have installed in an Albury-Wodonga park …
It’s a lovely idea:
By the banks of the Murray River, in the shade of an old river gum, stands a wood-fired oven.
A puff of smoke signals that Michael Laubli has fired the large brick oven, feeding it with red gum logs from the back of his ute.
The following afternoon, when the fire has reduced to a bed of ash and embers, Albury-Wodonga locals and visitors arrive with pots, pans, tins and trays filled with the food they will cook in the Albury community wood-fired oven under the supervision of Laubli, official oven co-ordinator. Everyone is welcome.

Wonder who I’d have to talk to at my local council for that to happen where I am?
I grew up on the Murray, a bit further downstream, and can picture this far too easily, particularly the gathering of locals to break bread and catch up on gossip.
If only more communities would institute something like this…

Hi Kerryn, it’s a great community project isn’t it. My fingers are crossed in the hope that you won’t have to wait too long for your oven to be fixed!

I bet it would be great for bread baking. And it would smell lovely.
My Indian friend’s Dad tried to make a tandoor in their back garden, with some success (but he wasn’t quite happy with the results).
Has your stove been fixed yet? I hope so!

A backyard tandoor oven sounds good also!
The oven repairs have been delayed due to household illness (we didn’t want to get the landlord in – he’s a plumber – while we were to ill to clean up) but should be fixed soon. Luckily the stovetop works or it would have been more urgent.
